When planning which disc jockey you will entrust with the important role of providing music at your wedding there are several important questions you need to ask, in order to gauge the level of honesty, professionalism and reliability of each DJ: 1. How many years of experience does he have as a DJ, and as a
? Your wedding is so important that an experienced DJ is essential. There is no room for error if the day is going to run smoothly. 2. Is the DJ employed by the company you phoned, or sub-contracted? Large companies tend to sub-contract their events. Problems can arise if the DJ accepts bookings from several companies and double books himself, or cancels your booking in order to accept a higher-paying function. (Try initiating a google search to see if he works through several agencies). 3. Does he use written contracts? A written contract is a legal document and so indicates the level of professionalism the DJ has. It outlines what is required of him on the day, and clearly indicates the agreement between all parties. 4. Will he hold the date? A professional DJ will allow you a period of time after meeting with him, in order to make a decision and without using high pressure sales methods to ‘force’ you into signing with him on the spot. It is necessary to meet with each DJ, in order to judge if he suits the ‘personality’ you are looking for. 5. Will my wedding be his only event on that day? If a DJ has another function booked earlier on the day of your wedding, he may well be physically exhausted later in the evening and so cannot give it his best effort. 6. Has the DJ worked at my chosen venue previously? Experience with the venue is an advantage, as the DJ would then be familiar with the acoustics, room configuration, security and power supply. 7. Is he comfortable in front of a microphone? It is vital that the DJ is the right ‘match’ for the atmosphere you wish to have at your wedding. Subtlety and elegance will not be produced by an upbeat and motivating voice over the PA. Conversely, guests who prefer to remain glued to their seats will not be motivated to dance if the DJ does not have the skills to motivate them. If you would also like your DJ to act as MC, he needs to be relaxed and confident to do so. 8. Are you able to obtain references? A DJ’s past clients are a good way to gauge the type and quality of his work. He should be happy to provide these contacts, and be proud of his professional approach to all events he has worked at. 9. What are his requirements and protocols on the night? What will the DJ wear? Does he drink alcohol or smoke at functions? Will he require a meal? 10. Does the DJ have a back-up plan, in case of problems? Accidents and problems can occur with even the most professional DJ. If he, or his equipment, is unable to complete the contract, does he have a contingency plan to ensure that your day is not ruined? He may have back-up staff ready to fill in, or liaises with other DJs who are able to provide equipment or staff at short notice. 11. How extensive and relevant is his music repertoire? Some professional DJs subscribe to a music update service, which gives up to date music. You should be able to be as involved as you would like in the play list, and the requests from guests on the night are considered, within your guidelines. 12. Does the DJ have liability insurance? This is necessary as protection for you, your guests and the venue.
